Dear Runners May 17, 2003

The medical students just wrote their last exam and I finally have time to get the results out. Sorry for the long delay. The T-shirts arrived and if you ordered one and haven’t just opened a package with a t-shirt in it, call me.

The Fifth Lake McMurtry Trail Run was held April 12, 2003, on a beautiful sunny day, with temperatures getting up into the 80’s. Great weather for the onlookers and volunteers but a bit warm for the 68 runners. Much, much better than the torrential rain and thunder of the last year though.

The 50 km had 24 starters and 21 finishers, a big improvement over last year. Jason Braun of Burden, KS won the 50 km in 4:46:01 taking the male open prize, while Jack Christian from Hammon, OK claimed the male masters prize in 4:58:16. The female open winner was Kathryn White in 5:33:21, while Tulsa triathlete Lisa Wei-Haas won the female masters prize, running her first ultra in a time of 6:03:45.

The 25 km race had 44 starters and 43 finishers and proved to be a very fast event this year with three of the course records falling. Former course record holder Mike Kelly of Stillwater broke his mark to win the 25 km mens’ masters prize in 1:46:33. Matthew Hart also of Stillwater had an even better day setting the new course record and winning the 25 km male open award in 1:42:20. Katie Kelly won the womens’ 25 km race setting another course record for the open division of 2:09:02. Sandie Brandenburger of Ponca City won the female masters award finishing in 2:18:52.

It was a really nice day at the lake this year. Of course any day without thunder, lightning and ankle deep, sucking mud would be good. There were coyotes calling when I was marking turns with flour early race morning. Deer and cottontail rabbits were on the south trail the day before. The food turned out pretty well despite an inadvertent change in the mushroom barley soup recipe. Chuck’s jambalaya was great as always. The best part of this race is that we raised over $800 to support trail maintenance and trail running. This money has been donated to the Oklahoma State University Running Club and the Stillwater Running Club to aid in their efforts to increase running in the region. The bulk of the profit is donated to the Stillwater Red Dirt Pedalers to aid in trail maintenance.
