Dear Runners April 27, 2004
The medical students have
written my exam and I’ve marked all the tests so I finally have time
to get the results out. Sorry for the long delay.
The Sixth Lake McMurtry Trail Run was held April 10,
2004, the coldest wettest day we’ve had so far.
Good, cool running weather but tough on the volunteers and onlookers.
Although the course was “wet” it wasn’t quite as bad as 2002. We had a
surprisingly high number of finishers, 69 starters in the combined races and
67 finishers. We also had a record high 22 race day entries.
The 50 km had 16
starters and 15 finishers, a big improvement over the last wet year, 2002.
Phil Sheridan, who has come down from Kansas and won the race twice
before, did it again. He ran 4:23:18, about 15 minutes off his master course
record time, taking both the open and masters’ prizes. Kathryn White
returned for her second Lake McMurtry trail run and again won the womens’
open race, in 5:38:04. The wet weather only added 5 minutes to her time.
Desiree Nowlin from Oklahoma City, OK won the womens’ masters
division with a 6:14:34 in her first LMTR
finish.
The 25 km race had 52 starters and 51 finishers and
proved to be a fast event despite the tough conditions. Adam Cohen, of Norman,
OK won the race with a 1:45:56, taking the open prize and setting the second
best time ever for the 25 km. Thomas Wright, 14 years of age from Stillwater,
OK was our youngest finisher ever and ran a very fast race of 2:04:19. Dan
Richards of Enid, OK won the male Masters’ prize in 2:10:16. Pam Sneed, from
Cleveland, OK, won both the
womens’ open and masters awards with a time of 2:23:39.
Jim Flesher was a five-time finisher in the 25 km race
while Jim Perry was the first five-time finisher in the 50 km race. Each
received a commemorative award. Dave Pappas and Matt Bickhard, both of Kansas,
continued their streaks, both having finished all six Lake McMurtry Trail
Runs.
It was a rough weekend for the volunteers and those
camping at the lake. The temperature on Sunday morning was 34 ºF and I don’t
think it was much warmer on race day Saturday. The heavy rains on
Friday and Saturday made it difficult to get the aid stations in, and to keep
them replenished. The help of Dave Wood and volunteers that came up with him
from Oklahoma City on Friday, as well as Jason Joines and members of the OSU
Running Club were greatly appreciated.
The food was good and we remembered to bring hot
chocolate this time. Chuck Streit cooked up a storm turning out two kinds of
soups, > 80 hamburgers and his jambalaya was great as always.
We had a major sponsor this year, Dave Wood of Wood 'N'
Barnes Publishing and Distribution and Blue of Blue Designs, both of Oklahoma
City, designed and produced the
t-shirts. To top it off Dave came up with a load of volunteers to help Friday
and ran the race on Saturday.
We made money this year and raised over $700 to support
trail maintenance and trail running. This money has been donated to the
Oklahoma State University Running Club and the Stillwater Running
Club to aid in their efforts to increase running in the region. The
bulk of the profit is donated to the Stillwater Red Dirt Pedalers to aid in
trail maintenance at Lake McMurtry.
The seventh LMTR is planned for April 9th, 2005 (the same time next year) so set your calendars accordingly.
Happy Trails,
Earl Blewett
